Washington, D.C. – October 19, 2023 – The University Club of Washington, DC, a distinguished hub for squash in the nation's capital, is delighted to announce the appointment of Ineta Mackevica as the Club's new Director of Squash, effective November 16, 2023.
Ineta Mackevica, a native of Liepaja, Latvia, brings an impressive background to her new role. She holds a Civil Engineering degree and is a nine-time national champion of Latvia. Ineta, who relocated to Washington, D.C. in January 2022, boasts a remarkable track record in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) rankings, achieving a career-best ranking of #42 in March 2022 and currently standing at #54. She remains actively engaged in playing squash, primarily participating in tournaments across the United States and Europe.
Notably, Ineta secured one PSA title at the DSQV Sportwerk Open in Hamburg in April 2021 and reached four finals on the PSA tour. This year, she embarked on a new journey by joining the Squash Doubles Association (SDA) pro tour.
Before assuming her Director of Squash role at the University Club, Ineta served as a Coach and Touring Pro at Squash On Fire since January 2022, demonstrating her commitment to the sport's development. She also took on the role of UClub Squash Program Coordinator in September 2022, setting the stage for her current appointment. |
Ineta shared her enthusiasm for this new chapter, stating, "While working at UClub as a Squash Program Coordinator, I could truly see the potential that UClub Squash holds. The Club has undergone significant changes, and I've been deeply involved in the development of its Squash Program.”
Ineta looks forward to elevating the Squash offerings. Her goal is to make squash more accessible to players of all levels, fostering interaction both on and off the court, organizing tournaments, and establishing leagues for players of all abilities. “I couldn't be more thrilled to become the Director of Squash at the University Club,” Ineta stated, adding that, “I already know the squash community here very well, and that's one of the main reasons I've taken this position because the members are simply fantastic!"
This special announcement comes on the heels of a momentous development for the world of squash. Earlier this week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed squash's inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. This historic decision marks the culmination of decades of efforts by the World Squash Federation (WSF) and various squash organizations to secure Olympic recognition, with endeavors dating back to the 1980s. Squash athletes worldwide, including Ineta, now have a remarkable opportunity to showcase their talents on the grandest sporting stage, with medal events for both men's and women's singles competitions.
