Markarova’s Remarks Came During A Member Event At The University Club of Washington, DC
WASHINGTON, D.C., March 16, 2023 — The University Club of Washington, DC hosted a talk with Oksana Markarova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United States of America, in which she provided an update on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its toll on her country’s 41 million citizens.
Ambassador Markarova has been an extraordinarily effective advocate for her country’s plight, in Washington and around the country, informing the American public about what Ukrainian citizens have experienced, what they need to repel the aggression, and their heroic resistance.
“A year ago, I promised that Ukrainians will not give up and not surrender. I think we kept that promise,” Ambassador Markarova said. “We thought this winter would be the most intense yet, but Ukraine still stands.”
She added, “We have put together, with our friends in the U.S., a ‘coalition of the willing.’ This war can only end with victory for Ukraine. That is the only goal.”
“The role of women in this year, the International Year of the Woman, has been very difficult: 14 million people, primarily women and children, have been displaced. It has been such a tragedy, women losing their houses. Education, healthcare, vaccinations – everything has been a challenge. And yet women have become an important element of Ukraine’s resilience and success.””
“This has been a very difficult journey,” Ambassador Markarova said. “We will have to work very hard to rebuild Ukraine. As I told you a year ago: Weapons, support for Ukraine, sanctions and international justice are what we request. We are very grateful for all we have received.”
“Thank you to Ambassador Markarova for her riveting remarks at the University Club one year after she spoke at the onset of the aggression,” said Douglas G. Bonner, president of The University Club of Washington, D.C. “While we are widely recognized as an historic D.C. institution offering fellowship, intellectual pursuits, fine dining and athletics, we are equally proud to be the premier diplomatic club in the nation’s capital and are fortunate to count many ambassadors from the diplomatic corps as fellow members. We are so fortunate to have benefited from her powerful insights.”
The Ambassador took questions from the audience of more than 150 for close to an hour.
Addressing the end-game, she noted, “Putin is seeking to recreate the Russian empire of the past but the national borders were long ago agreed by all including Russia. This is a fight we will win. We need financial support and weapons. We do not need other people to do the fighting for us.”
After the formal program, Ambassador Markarova was presented the Club’s “Excellence in International Leadership” award that highlights the work, persistence and tenacity of a Club member or a deserving non-member in international and diplomatic affairs.
The award is a detailed, hand-crafted dove-in-flight statue representing appreciation for those who are committed to accomplishing long-term achievements. Doves are symbolic as a sign of peace and stability while recognizing bold achievements that require significant determination.
